The first leg of the journey to Trinity Falls, in the north east of St. Vincent, is by land along the dramatic leeward coast. From Petit Byahaut, it is two hours of twisting roadway past picturesque fishing villages, sheer cliffs and lush countryside. At Richmondvale you'll travel through a working farm, by hand terraced hillside farms and then into the rainforest where the passable road ends.
The next hour you trek along the footpath through the rainforest under a canopy of sky high trees. The trail begins to head down into a valley and you hear the distant roar of water. Down a path, down steep stairs, until finally you reach the river above the falls. The river, fed with crystal waters thousands of feet above and warmed by dozens of hot springs creates delightful pools and lesser falls to play in below this trinity of falls. Massive boulders provide the ideal lunch location in sun or shade.
The splendor of Trinity Falls far surpasses the better known Baleine Waterfall. Three separate plumes of water plummet over the rocks into a pool which in its turn plunges into a whirlpool pond that massages you as you swim. The spray from the water floats in the air above the head of the falls like a halo, and on the right-hand side, depending on the position of the sun, a rainbow shimmers.
Please note that you must be a very good swimmer to venture into the whirlpool. Leaving Trinity Falls you can wade upstream through shallow and deep pools where crayfish and river lobster abound, past sheer cliffs of molten lava and sandstone up the meandering valley until looking up you can see on your right the virgin rainforests of Morne Garu, and on your left, in stark contrast, the naked muscular slopes of La Soufriere Volcano.
By now, half the day has passed and your return to sea offers you a forest filled with plant life possibly unnoticed on your initial approach to the falls. After such a glorious adventure into St. Vincent, you will reflect on the natural beauty of the interior and Trinity Falls.
